Manage for Success: Farewell 2012, Newsletter #126, December 2012

"Manage for Success" is a free occasional newsletter for record label executives who want to operate their companies efficiently and successfully. It's published by Keith Holzman of Solutions Unlimited, a management consultant, troubleshooter, and trusted advisor, and is based on his many years as a senior executive in the music industry.

2012 will soon be "history" as we close the books on another year. For the record industry it was a year of few trends, and finalization of events presaged last year. As expected, EMI was split up so that now there are only three majors -- a bloated Universal, a not quite so bloated Sony, and a rather lean Warners.

Streaming services -- most notably Spotify -- increased their dominance, as the public trended more to "listeners" than "buyers." And the public became more comfortable with the "Cloud" as storage for their music and photo collections.

Piracy remains a problem, and Congress is still struggling with issues of copyright, payment of royalties by domestic radio stations, and moves by Pandora (among others) to pay yet a smaller percentage in royalties to artists, labels, and publishers.

The devastation caused by "perfect" storm Sandy was a reminder about the importance of being prepared for such events -- both for the continued smooth running of your record label and for the welfare of your family.

I wrote previously about planning for such contingencies in my Newsletter #42 of October 2004.
